This study will aim to establish whether crop varieties require dedicated organic trials or whether advice on their performance under organic conditions can be extrapolated from conventional trial data. A number of varieties from different vegetable types will be selected for their expected suitability for production under organic conditions. Selected varieties will be used in trials examining parameters such as speed of emergence and establishment, total and marketable yields, quality attributes, pest resistance and incidence of disease. The establishment of reliable data with these crops will allow additional advice to be provided to organic growers on the most appropriate variety and husbandry techniques to obtain maximum marketable yield of good... |

This study aimed to study varieties of cabbage, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and swedes under organic conditions and to determine significant factors in the organic production systems that affect variety performance. Additional investigations were carried out with potatoes to study the effects of blight and potato cyst nematode. All trials were conducted on UKROFS registered sites and to appropriate organic husbandry standards. Measurements and assessments followed guidelines used for conventional trials, with quality criteria being based upon the requirements of the retail trade. Any assessment of colour and shape would be in line with established charts and descriptions. Results of the study will provide advice and recommendations to organic growers for... |

Blaue Schweden: Eher tiefer Ertrag; Knollen oval, Augen etwas... |

Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) is one of the few cultivated plants domesticated in Europe. The crop is underutilised and the number of available varieties is small in Central Europe. On-farm management of genetic resources can be an important means to increase infraspecific diversity, and to improve the quality of crops. In the present experiment quality-improvement by progeny selection on-farm was investigated. In a first step parsnips were selected for organoleptic quality by a technique that allows to harvest seeds from the plant tested. In a second step, progenies of positive- and negative-selected plants were compared with the original population. The experiment was carried out with the varieties Aromata (2006) and White King (2008) in... |

Breeding is an important tool to develop varieties with an optimal adaptation to organic farming. Several important traits are not covered by conventional research and breeding. At the State Plant Breeding Institute we are presently working on (1) resistance of rye to ergot (Claviceps purpurea), (2) nitrogen(N)-use efficiency in triticale, and (3) protein content of sunflower. The inheritance of these complex traits is quantitative. They are analysed in replicated field experiments at two locations in three years at several organic farms in Germany. For testing ergot resistance in rye, 68 populations, 250 full-sib families, 64 lines, and their 90 testcrosses were inoculated at mid-flowering by a spore suspension. All four material groups displayed... |
